Fire Horse
17 February 2026
17 February 2026 marks the beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse in the Chinese Lunar calendar.
This is no ordinary year, it only comes around once every 60 years, and often associated with strong energy, determination and profound transformation. Fire Horse years are historically associated with a powerful urge to break free from limitation.
I’ve spoken before about New Year’s resolutions and why they can matter. At their best, they simply create a pause - a moment to reset, to draw a line, and decide to bring something positive into your life or let go of something that no longer fits. The challenge, of course, is consistency. Once January fades and the novelty start to wear off, old habits have a way of creeping back in. There’s no judgement in that. Real change is hard and sustaining it over time is even harder…but achievable.
This is why (ever the optimist), I see the year of the Fire Horse as a second reset. A chance to reignite intentions that may have stalled, or to begin again entirely, this time with clarity, not pressure. And for those who didn’t make any commitments at all on NYE, it’s the perfect moment to clear the cobwebs and start with a blank canvas.
Until 17 February, 2026, we find ourselves in the lunar year of the Snake. This period is significant, serving as a transitional phase, a pivotal moment that invites deep reflection before we take decisive action. It sets the stage for the coming Fire Horse year. The symbolism of the Snake is profound; just as it sheds its skin to grow, this year embodies themes of rebirth, renewal, and preparation for what lies ahead.
So, if you’ve been putting in the work but haven’t yet seen results, don’t be too hard on yourselves. It may be because you’re still shedding your old skin. This isn’t failure, it’s growth. This process is necessary, and absolutely vital in preparing you for the momentum and intensity of the Fire Horse year, for which we need to enter feeling lighter and ready to go.
Figuratively shedding one’s skin means that we ought to do some deeper work on ourselves and look at what might be holding us back in life. Here’s a simple but powerful exercise I recommend, even if you’re still on track with your goals. Ask yourself honestly:
Is there anything I’m holding onto that’s weighing me down? Anything keeping me from the person I want to become, or the life I want to live?
You’ll know if there is. It often shows up as anger, fear, guilt, shame, or resentment. These emotional weights don’t protect us, they drain us. They lower our vibrational energy and quietly block growth.
One way to rid yourself of these weights is to write down your thoughts and feelings. By transferring them onto paper, you can process these emotions more effectively, helping to clear them from your conscious/sub-conscious mind. Try to dig deep and be honest. Name what happened, how it made you feel, and most importantly write that you forgive yourself and are ready to let it go. When you’re done, ensure that you dispose of your list by either burning it safely, shredding it, or simply throwing it away. This is an important part of the process of letting go and moving on.
There’s a lesson here from nature. Sea turtles often become covered in parasitic barnacles that weigh them down, impairing their ability to swim, hunt, and even eat. Remarkably, turtles will swim up to passing boats, allowing fishermen to remove the barnacles. Once freed, the turtles return to the sea lighter, faster, and unburdened. We all accumulate barnacles as we navigate our journeys through life and we too need help removing them from time to time. It’s liberating and clearing this emotional weight now prepares us for what’s coming.
The year of the Fire Horse invites those who are ready. Clearing your weight or emotional baggage now ensures you meet it unburdened and ready to go.
Year of the Fire Horse and what it brings:
Transformational Energy: This is a year of intense drive and rapid, decisive change. The Fire Horse does not move slowly or cautiously, it surges forward with momentum, demanding bold action and clarity of purpose. It represents renewal through movement.
Ask yourself: what did you say you wanted this year? Is it still a priority? If not, realign, refocus and set a clear intention.
This may be the year you finally release what no longer serves you, alcohol, drugs, a draining job, limiting habits, outdated identities. It may be the year you change careers, rebuild your health, or step into a stronger, more disciplined version of yourself.
The Fire Horse energy pushes you to confront your patterns and choose growth over comfort. It calls for courage, the courage to make difficult decisions, to walk away when necessary, and to pursue freedom with conviction.
Strength and Determination: Harnessing this strength can empower you if you’re struggling with addiction to commit to your recovery journey. This year encourages setting clear goals and maintaining focus, which is crucial in the fight against addiction or bad habits.
The Fire Horse brings a surge of inner strength. It fuels discipline, resilience, and the kind of determination that doesn’t fade when things get uncomfortable.
If you’re trying to break destructive habits, this energy can be a powerful ally. Change is not passive; it demands clarity, commitment, and the courage to choose long-term freedom over short-term relief. This is a year that supports exactly that.
Set clear goals. Draw firm lines. Protect your focus. The Fire Horse rewards those who move with intention and refuse to drift
Emphasis on Self-Reflection: This year calls for honest introspection and heightened self-awareness. It invites you to pause and examine the patterns, triggers, and underlying beliefs that quietly shape your choices. When you understand what drives you, your motivations, fears, and emotional habits you gain the power to respond differently.
Clarity creates choice. And with choice comes the ability to build healthier responses, stronger boundaries, and a more intentional direction for your life.
Adventurous Spirit: The Fire Horse embodies a spirit of adventure and exploration. This can inspire you to seek new hobbies, interests, and fulfilling activities that replace the need for substances/bad habits. Engaging in new experiences can build confidence and provide a sense of purpose beyond addiction.
Opportunities for Healing: The transformative energy of this year can open the door to healing, whether through therapy, mindfulness, or holistic practices that strengthen mind and body. Embracing this work creates the clarity and resilience needed to step into lasting change.
Community and Support: The Fire Horse year promotes social connections and teamwork. Engaging with supportive communities, whether through friends, family, or support groups, can enhance motivation and accountability. Sharing experiences and learning from others can provide invaluable insights and encouragement.
The Year of the Fire Horse rewards those who step forward unburdened and with intention to move forward in life. All the reflection, all the shedding of old skin, all the work you do now isn’t just preparation, it’s a declaration that you are ready to act, and to claim the life you want.
This year is about clarity and momentum. It calls for decisive choices, bold action, and the willingness to let go of what no longer serves you. It asks you to examine your patterns, confront what weighs you down, and commit to a life built on growth and purpose.
The Fire Horse doesn’t promise comfort, but it promises possibility. Those who embrace its energy will find strength in discipline and courage in commitment. It’s a year to move faster, think bigger, and act with intention.
So, take a deep breath, shed what holds you back, set your intention, and step into the momentum that is coming. The Fire Horse waits for no one, but it is ready to carry those who are prepared toward transformation and the life they’ve been ready to create all along.
The best is yet to come - stay strong!
